We spoke to the experts to get an idea of the trends entering our living room designs as the year progresses. Here’s what we learned.
Multi-functional furniture is a must-have
Multi-functional furniture has slowly trickled into the home, becoming a must-have feature for many homeowners.
Shawn Zar, Interior Designer and Furniture Expert at Superior Seating, says, “I love the cleverness of multi-functional furniture. It’s a game-changer, especially in urban homes where space is at a premium.”
Zar continues, offering some ideas on which multi-purpose furniture items homeowners can add to their living rooms. “Sofas that transform into beds or extendable tables cater to our dynamic lifestyles while offering a sleek, minimalist aesthetic,” he says.
Zara O’Hare, Interior Design Consultant at Land of Rugs, also adds her perspective on living room multi-functional furniture. She says, “We’ll see more sleeper sofas, ottomans with hidden storage, nesting tables, and customizable modular seating. The focus here is on flexibility as remote work and hybrid spaces become more common.”
Natural elements and biophilic design are entering our spaces
Biophilic design has been around for a while. However, this year, we can expect the trend to be a prominent element within our home’s designs.
Shawn Zar at Superior Seating says, “There’s something inherently calming about incorporating elements of nature into our homes. In 2024, expect to see this concept bloom, with organic shapes, materials, and an abundance of plants enhancing our connection to the natural world.”
Amber Shay, National Design Director at Meritage Homes, describes just how homeowners can achieve a natural and biophilic look. She says, “Bring the outdoors inside by embracing nature in your design. Incorporate colors, textures, plants, and wood accents for a touch of nature in your home, including your living room.”
This year is all about vintage and thrifted pieces
Vintage pieces and aesthetics are also gaining much popularity in home design. We can expect our interiors to harbor more vintage finds that add a bit of charm and character to the home.
Zara O’Hare at Land of Rugs tells us, “In 2024, we’ll see people curating living rooms full of treasured thrift stores and flea market finds like Persian rugs, velvet chairs, retro lamps, and antique maps or curios.”
These vintage pieces give the home a “lived-in” and cozy aesthetic. Gone are the trends of stark white and pristine interiors. Homeowners are craving eccentric and personable home designs that give their spaces a history or story to tell.
Sustainability has become a focus in our interiors
Shawn Zar at Superior Seating tells us that sustainability is on many homeowners’ and designers’ minds. “I’ve seen a growing appreciation for sustainable materials,” Zar says, “and it’s a trend that’s here to stay.” With a lot of focus on natural elements, biophilia, and thrifted vintage finds, it’s no surprise that sustainability is also at the root of modern-day home design.
Zar elaborates, offering insight on how homeowners can design a sustainable living room. Zar says, “Furniture crafted from reclaimed wood or recycled materials isn’t just eco-conscious; it adds a story and character to your living space.”
Artem Kropovinsky, Interior designer and founder at Arsight, notes that “beautiful arrangements of reclaimed woods and eco-friendly fabrics will bring an air of elegance to sustainable design.”
A new interest in artisan and handcrafted pieces
Alongside vintage finds and an interest in sustainability, many living room designs will see an increase in artisan pieces.
Amber Shay at Meritage Homes says, “DIY your home design by bringing artisanal objects into your home. I expect to see artisanal elements such as pottery, tile, and dishware.”
Handmade and handcrafted pieces like custom furniture, glazed pottery, zellige tiles, and handpainted wallpapers are becoming must-have features in the home.
Bold items, bold palettes, and bold decor
From bold color palettes to unique statement pieces, 2024 living room design will showcase many exceptional and grand features.
Shawn Zar at Superior Seating tells us, “As a furniture expert, I encourage clients to be bold and personal with their choices. Vivid hues and statement pieces that reflect individuality will dominate, making each living room a reflection of its owner’s taste and personality.”
Wallpaper is making a comeback
“Wallpaper is making a comeback,” says Zara O’Hare at Land of Rugs. She tells us that adding wallpaper is an “easy way to incorporate color, texture, and prints. We’ll see adventurous statement walls in tropical motifs, chinoiserie toiles, or art deco geometrics contrasting simpler furnishings.”
For homeowners not quite ready to make the leap into this year’s bolder design aesthetics, O’Hare says, “Neutrals like grasscloth or textured vinyl work, too.”
Smart Tech will be prominent in our living rooms
Zara O’Hare at Land of Rugs tells us that smart tech will also be a feature on many 2024 living room designs. O’Hare says, “Smart televisions blend seamlessly into living spaces with concealed cords and framing. Voice assistant speakers double as home sound systems and home automation controls adjust lighting, temperature, and electronics. The goal is to integrate technology discretely for ultimate comfort and convenience.”
Expect contemporary living room designs
Contemporary design will also be prevalent in our living rooms this year. Amber Shay at Meritage Homes says, “Clean, simple lines and a more contemporary style continue to be popular. Consumers are seeking soft contemporary elements like soft curves in a wall, arches in fixtures, and simple furniture, including in your living room.”
As we look forward to 2024 home design, bold features, a focus on natural elements, handcrafted pieces, and plenty of personality seem to be on the rise. Living room decor will be about character and charm, allowing homeowners to show off their unique aesthetics.
